When a thermal runaway accident occurs in a lithium-ion battery energy storage station, the battery emits a large amount of flammable electrolyte vapor and thermal runaway gas, which may cause serious combustion and explosion accidents when they are ignited in a confined space.
To address the safety issues associated with lithium-ion energy storage, NFPA 855 and several other fire codes require any BESS the size of a small ISO container or larger to be provided with some form of explosion control. This includes walk-in units, cabinet style BESS and buildings.
In the ejecta from two phases of the battery, EMC has the lowest explosion limit and optimal explosion concentration, at 2.85 % and 8.6 % respectively, making it the most prone to explosion with maximum explosive power. The explosion limits of TR gas range widely from 7.45 % to 39.5 %.
The primary component of battery initial ejecta is EMC, with a phase ratio of ejecta gas to liquid of 4.92:1.
