The average cost of a rooftop solar system connected with the grid is 75 rupees per watt, as per the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The government has introduced subsidy schemes and other incentives to address this cost and encourage people to transition to solar power for personal or commercial use.
The potential for rooftop solar PV is primarily a function of the orientation of the building/roof. In cold climates, buildings are often orientated to maximize incoming solar radiation. In hotter climates, buildings and associated landscaping are frequently situated to avoid incoming solar radiation.
The Rooftop Solar PV Comparison Update produced by CAN Europe and eco-union, with contributions from our members, is an updated version of the Rooftop Solar PV Comparison Report published by CAN Europe in May 2022.
But there remains a substantial amount of work to be done to accelerate the deployment of rooftop solar PV to reach the current National target of 3 GW to 5 GW per year of new capacity set by the 10-year Energy Programme Decree (PPE).
This should come as no surprise to the authors of Australia’s Rooftop Real Estate report, which found that households equipped with solar PV had electricity costs 20% lower than their non-PV counterparts. Residential rooftop solar PV project types are the smallest in size, ranging from 5 to 20 kilowatts (0.005-0.2MW).
The costs of electricity from residential rooftop solar PV have fallen especially rapidly. In four metropolitan areas in the state of California, for example, the LCOE for residential solar PV was seen to decrease 45% on average between 2010 (first quarter) and 2016 (second quarter).
