Solar collectors aim to convert solar radiation into thermal energy reducing heat losses. The vacuum tube solar collector consists of a set of cylindrical tubes. The tubes are made up of a selective absorber on a reflective seat and surrounded by a transparent glass cylinder.
In solar vacuum tube collectors, the insulating effect is achieved by a vacuum in a glass tube or the space of two concentric glass tubes. Evacuated tube solar collector absorbs part of the solar radiation which strikes the outer glass tube. The radiation crosses the vacuum space between the outer and inner pipe without energy loss.
Evacuated tube solar thermal collectors consist of a heat pipe filled with a liquid inside a glass enclosure (Fig. 8.2). The thermal energy from the sun is captured, and the heat is transferred to the working fluid while undergoing a phase change: evaporation and condensation cycles. Figure 8.2.
The benefits of vacuum tube collectors versus flat solar collectors are explained below. Evacuated tube solar collectors are cheaper than flat solar collectors. Nowadays, the price has improved due to the growing demand, experience, and new tube manufacturing technologies.
Flat plate collectors are the most common type. They are also referred to as non concentrating collectors and have the same area for intercepting and for absorbing solar radiation. A typical flat plate collector is an insulated metal box with a glass or plastic cover (called the glazing) and a dark-coloured absorber plate.
Evacuated tube solar collector (ETSC) provides higher fluid outlet temperature with lesser heat loss compared to flat plate collectors due to the combined effect of vacuum insulation of the absorber and a highly selective surface coating (Kim and Seo, 2007; Tong et al., 2015).
