Accelerating the annual PV installation rate compared to the current value is a no-regret option since all the LTS scenarios require PV capacity to at least double in size by 2030. Indeed, as explained above, solar PV module demand for the EU and UK would increase from 16.5 GW DC in 2019 to 50 GW DC in 2030.
Between 1992 and 2023, the worldwide usage of photovoltaics (PV) increased exponentially. During this period, it evolved from a niche market of small-scale applications to a mainstream electricity source. From 2016-2022 it has seen an annual capacity and production growth rate of around 26%- doubling approximately every three years.
The number of households relying on solar PV grows from 25 million today to more than 100 million by 2030 in the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario (NZE Scenario). At least 190 GW will be installed from 2022 each year and this number will continue to rise due to increased competitiveness of PV and the growing appetite for clean energy sources.
In 2012, the global operational installed capacity reached to 100 GW . The World annual solar photovoltaic production is shown in Fig. 2. It is considered as one of the commonly used renewable energy sources for the micro-grid systems [32,33]. Fig. 2. World annual solar photovoltaic capacity, 1995–2012 .
By the end of 2022, the global cumulative installed PV capacity reached about 1,185 gigawatts (GW), supplying over 6% of global electricity demand, up from about 3% in 2019. In 2022, solar PV contributed over 10% of the annual domestic consumption of electricity in nine countries, with Spain, Greece and Chile over 17%.
The cumulative PV power capacity additions range between 455 and 605 GW DCFig. 3 illustrates the growth needed for the 2020 to 2030 period. The 2030 values are higher than the current ambition (400 GW DC in 2030) by 55–205 GW DC.
