Determining how long an EV would take to charge up is therefore a simple question of dividing the battery size by the speed of the charge. For example, a 100kWh battery would take 40 minutes to go from full to empty using a 150kWh charger.
Level 1 chargers take the longest to achieve a full charge, Level 3 chargers are the fastest. A typical electric vehicle (60 kWh battery) takes just under 8 hours to charge from empty to full with a 7 kW Level 2 (L2) charger and just under 3 hours with a 19 kW L2 charger. Level 1 chargers can take days to reach a full charge.
The Bolt EV's battery, for example, takes seven hours to fully charge with a 240-volt charger, adding about 25 miles of range per hour. But because most owners charge daily to keep their EV topped off, it will only take about an hour to charge the battery to the wanted percentage after a normal day of driving.
An empty battery will take longer to charge than a battery already at 50%. Interestingly, the rate at which electricity is accepted declines as the battery gets closer to full. In other words, a depleted battery typically adds more miles in 20 minutes of EV charge time than a half-full battery.
First and most obvious: the charging station you use. Most public stations will be type 2, which can deliver a full charge in a few hours and a reasonable amount of juice in a half-hour to an hour of charging time. Some people also get type 2 stations installed in their homes for faster charging.
The larger an EV's battery, the longer it will take to fill up. Plug-in hybrid vehicles rely mostly on gas for power, switching to an onboard battery in low-demand situations to save fuel. This means their battery pack is much smaller than an all-electric car, holds less power, and takes less time to charge.
