Sector overview The total power generation capacity in Afghanistan stood at 641 MW in 2020 as per the latest available statistics from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). About 52 per cent of the capacity (333 MW) was accounted for by hydro, 43 per cent (277 MW) by thermal and the remaining 5 per cent (31 MW) by solar.
Currently, the power sector is governed by Ministry of Energy and Water (MEW) and operated by Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), which controls & operates all the activities of power sector throughout the country.
Energy at the household, small business and community institution level is a central pillar in building sustainable development and access to better livelihoods for the citizens of Afghanistan. Rapid expansion of grid and off-grid electrification is occurring across the country, facilitated by a range of national and international actors.
Today, the Government of Afghanistan, donors, private sector actors and civil society organizations require access to quality information and data about the current energy landscape in Afghanistan, in order to better tailor responses to the country’s growing energy needs. This research sets out to fill some of the existing information gaps.
Afghanistan has the potential to produce over 222,000 MW of electricity by using solar panels. The use of solar power is becoming widespread in Afghanistan. Solar parks have been established in a number of cities. Solar-powered street lights are seen in all Afghan cities and towns.
The majority of electricity in Afghanistan is imported. The Naghlu Dam is one of the largest dams in Afghanistan, which provides some electricity to Kabul Province, Nangarhar Province and Kapisa Province. Energy in Afghanistan is provided by hydropower followed by fossil fuel and solar power.
