The battery test plan established for the battery management system (BMS) studies belongs to the field of experimental science. In order to establish accurate battery models and develop high-performance BMS, it is necessary to design and imply a series of targeted tests to acquire the battery performance under diverse conditions.
The purpose of this manual is to document a series of battery performance testing procedures to standardize data collection and to promote data sharing and utilization across the U.S Navy and Marine Corps. Standardization of battery data collection is required to accurately assess and compare emerging battery technologies against one another.
The test method is to fully charge the battery at standard current with constant-current constant-voltage (CCCV). The schematic diagram of CCCV charging is shown in Fig. 2.11. After fully charging the battery, rest for a period of time and then discharge the battery with a constant current (CC) to the lower cutoff voltage.
This manual is intended to provide a battery testing methodology which can clearly and unbiasedly identify cell strengths and weaknesses across various cell types and chemistries. This manual should be employed to test rechargeable battery chemistries (Li-ion, Na-ion, etc.).
