The Saudi agency in charge of developing the nations renewable energy sector, Ka-care, announced in May 2012 that the nation would install 41 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity by 2032. It was projected to be composed of 25 GW of solar thermal, and 16 GW of photovoltaics.
There is a growing interest in utilization of solar energy in Saudi Arabia as the country is blessed with abundant solar flux throughout the year. Saudi Arabia has one of the highest solar irradiation in the world, estimated at approximately 2,200 thermal kWh of solar radiation per square meter.
The total energy consumption in the Kingdom is rapidly rising at an average rate of about 6 percent per annum. To meet the rising local energy demand, Saudi Arabia plans to increase generating capacity to 120 GW by 2020.
In March 2018 Saudi Arabia announced that together with Softbank they plan to install 200 GW of solar power through 2030. This compares to a global solar power installation of 100 GW in 2017 and a total installed capacity of 77 GW in Saudi Arabia in 2016. This project was cancelled in September 2018.
1,100 megawatts (MW) of photovoltaics and 900 megawatts of concentrated solar thermal (CSP) was expected to be completed by early 2013. Also in 2013, solar power in Saudi Arabia had achieved grid parity and was able to produce electricity at costs comparable to conventional sources.
The country is strategically located near the Sun Belt, not to mention wide availability of empty stretches of desert that may accommodate solar power generating infrastructure. Moreover, vast deposits of sand can be used in the manufacture of silicon PV cells which makes Saudi Arabia an attractive location for both CSP and PV power generation.
Solar Power Capacity Of Saudi Arabia To Reach 5.1 GW By 2031
Saudi Arabia''s solar power potential will grow to just above 5.1GW between 2022-2031 due to the support of its long-term plans for the power sector. The country''s National Renewable Energy Programme (NREP) established a state-driven auction tendering system for renewable power capacity.
