According to trade body SolarPower Europe, Belgium installed around 500W of solar generation capacity per person in 2022, meeting the targets set out in its 2019 National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP). However, SolarPower Europe expects this per-capita capacity to jump to around 1,600W by the end of the decade.
More so, Belgium is primarily invested in PV Solar Systems and could help the region achieve its contribution towards the EU target of renewables .Belgium's renewable energy growth is expected to go from 20% to over 25% within the next two years.
In light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and goals to reduce fossil fuel dependency, the federal government decided in March 2022 to amend the law to extend 2 GW of nuclear capacity by ten years. Belgium has a well-developed and highly interconnected electricity system serving domestic demand and supporting the European electricity market.
Belgium's target was to commission 8.9GW of solar capacity by the end of 2023. Belgium easily met this target, but some countries have set more ambitious plans, such as Germany with a target of 215GW and France with a plan for 60GW.
Belgium’s transmission and distribution system operator says it plans to allow household solar panels and batteries with a plug and socket to connect to the grid from May 2025.
The technical potential for renewables in Belgium is almost fully utilised: 8 GW of offshore wind, 20 GW of onshore wind and 100 GW of rooftop PV. Investments in 8 GW of e-fuel/hydrogen peak plants – in the shape of STEG plants – take place to mitigate periods of low wind and sun.
