In order to obtain a higher current and voltage level and improve the overall energy efficiency, batteries are connected in series and parallel. Bulk model is the most used model to simulate battery packs, and the simulation results of single cell are enlarged several times to represent a battery pack.
In this study, a design optimization methodology is proposed to optimize the features of mechanical design (e.g. minimization of mass, maximization of minimum natural frequency and minimization of maximum deformation) of the battery pack enclosure. The proposed methodology is comprised of four phases.
Extensive calculations are then carried out to determine the battery pack's energy, capacity, weight, and size. The design involves grouping cells into modules for easier management and protection, while also incorporating cell holders to enhance stability and minimize vibrations.
In the previously published work by the authors , a model parametrization framework for the Li-ion battery cell and pack based on the calibration optimization methodology has been proposed for the electric vehicle applications.
Battery pack comprises battery modules which in turn consist of thousands of cells in series or in parallel. Recently, the development of battery packs for designing vehicles and reinforcing the road safety has been carefully reviewed. (Garg et al. 2016; Aneke and Wang 2016; Ramadesigan 2017).
Jia Feng et al. optimized components such as the carrying beam of the battery pack and box cover, which reduced the battery pack box mass by 41.7 kg, solved the problem of stress concentration on the bearing beam, and resulted in a maximum displacement reduction of 3.6 mm under quasi-static operating conditions .
