The overriding objective for testing PV products is to enhance the durability, longevity, and performance of photovoltaic modules and solar panels. When placed in service these products are exposed to searing heat, sub zero freezing cold, and drenching high humidity.
A Kelvin or four-wire measurement is essential to getting accurate IV data while testing a solar cell. A variable load is applied across the four wires in order to get a variety of current and voltage measurements for the device under test. Exactly what current and voltage is unknown until tested, which is why there is some iteration needed.
Apart from internal individual contract provisions between suppliers and manufacturers, standardized quality assurance guidelines for solar cells do not exist. The lack of standards and individual customer needs means customized test equipment and test are needed. This is where materials testing experts come into play.
Various safety tests are recommended for the completed module, including strength testing the frame structure, determining the press-in and extraction forces of the corner brackets, pull-out tests on electrical connections and tensile, compression and flexure tests on the mounting system for attaching the module.
IEC and UL solar test specifi cations call for test condi- tions as low as -40°C. It is essential the chamber be capable of providing substantial capacity at these low temperatures. To accomplish this, it is advantageous to specify a chamber that uses a cascade refrigera- tion system.
The seemingly most straightforward manner of testing photovoltaic devices is to expose them outdoors and monitor their performance either in situ under natural sunlight or indoors with a solar simulator at periodic intervals.
