n-type PV modules with larger dimensions is an emerging technology. Outdoor performance test shows the power generation advantages of n-type PV modules. Risks come along with the benefits of high-efficiency PV modules with larger dimensions and larger current, solutions are already available and therefore additional care need to be taken.
Indeed, cost factors – as well as the rapid shift in technology and wafer sizes – are hindering the development of n-type. The technology also faces the challenges of capacity utilization rates and production output. Utilization rates for manufacturers of n-type technologies sit below 50%.
From 2024 however, all signs point to a dramatic shift to n-type substrates, with this higher-efficiency platform gaining 50% market-share by 2026. By the end of the decade, almost all PV modules produced will be using n-type wafers.
N-cell capacity deployment sees delays; PERC tech likely to remain dominant this year. Projected total wafer capacity by 2023's end is estimated to reach around 1,172 GW, marking a 106% increase year-on-year. The majority of this newly added capacity is attributed to N-type TOPCon cell technology.
After more than one year of outdoor grid-connected power generation, for n-type TOPCon modules, the average attenuation of all modules in the entire string is 0.15%. The internal capacitance leads to a strong hysteresis effect in I–V measurements.
