The purpose of this database is to give a global view of all energy storage technologies. They are sorted in five categories, depending on the type of energy acting as a reservoir. Relevant types of data for each technology have been highlighted. Study on energy storage - contribution to the security of the electricity supply in Europe.
The light blue fi eld indicates the storage capacity in Germany in pumped hydro (40 GWh, 7 GW), which represents 95 % of total energy storage today [den10], and is totally inadequate for the quantity of energy which will need to be stored (area under the purple curve).

An appropriate deployment of energy storage technologies is of primary importance for the transition towards an energy system. For that reason, this database has been created as a complement for the Study on energy storage - contribution to the security of the electricity supply in Europe. However, in addition to the old changes in the range of devices, several new ESTs and storage systems have been developed for sustainable, RE storage, such as 1) power flow batteries, 2) super-condensing systems, 3) superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES), and 4) flywheel energy storage (FES).
