Luckily for us, John B. Goodenough is not like most people. Back in 2016, a team of scientists led by the 94-years old professor published a paper on the glass battery, the newest development in solid-state batteries and a possible blueprint for the future of energy storage.
Researcher Maria Helena Braga works on the glass electrolyte for the new battery. Doped with lithium or sodium, the glass electrolyte allows the battery to be recharged within minutes instead of hours. Solid-state batteries, attached by blue clamps, are tested at the University of Texas at Austin’s Cockrell School of Engineering.

The new glass battery was developed by Goodenough – who is 97 years old and still an active professor at the University of Texas – and Maria Helena Braga, professor of engineering at the University of Porto in Portugal. By “spiking” glass with either sodium or lithium to form an electrode within the battery, the researchers say the new battery technology provides three times the energy storage capacity of comparable lithium-ion batteries.
