Emergency power supply is a critical system. Planners should verify that vital systems and locations have a power supply for all situations. Generators that are attached to internal combustion engines are most common as emergency supply systems. However, stored electrical energy as battery racks are used as well.
Safety and Independence: Emergency power systems are often dedicated to supporting life safety systems, including emergency lighting for egress, fire pumps, sprinkler systems, and fire alarm systems, ensuring that these critical functions remain operational during a power outage.
The power capability of this emergency power-system is rated such that sufficient power for operation of essential loads is provided for the period of evacuation of the crew. In case of a failure on the primary power feeder, 2 × 2.5 kW as back-up power can be delivered via extra power feeders from the SHUTTLE.
The following emergency power sources are provided to take over the supply of safety-relevant essential loads—as required for residual heat removal on reactor shutdown, for emergency core cooling, and for other safety functions (e.g., containment isolation)—in the event of failure of the normal auxiliary power supply:
Nadine El Dabaghi, Jasmina Vucetic, in Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors, 2022 The emergency power supply system (EPSS) is an independent power system, consisting of its own on-site power generation and distribution systems (whose normal power supply comes from Class III). This system belongs to Group II.
Hospital equipment that is very sensitive to power interruptions may also be placed on an uninterruptable power supply to even out this transition and prevent interference with the function of the device. The emergency system is made up of two mandatory branches: the life safety branch and the critical branch.
UPS vs. ESS
According to the International Fire Code® (IFC®), a UPS and ESS are equivalent, based on the definition of a Battery System, Stationary Storage. This type of system typically provides standby or emergency power, acts as an uninterruptable power supply, manages load shedding and load sharing, and delivers similar other capabilities.

For critical devices such as medical devices or IT infrastructure, EcoFlow power stations can NOT be used as an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) unit. This is because it is not meant to be in constant use (as UPS units need to be) and power stations cannot switch from grid-supplied power to internal-battery power instantly like a UPS system.
