The pace of integration of energy storage systems in MENA is driven by three main factors: 1) the technical need associated with the accelerated deployment of renewables, 2) the technological advancements driving ESS cost competitiveness, and 3) the policy support and power markets evolution that incentivizes investments.
Policies on energy storage are closely related to economic development and energy storage technology research. Currently, countries with relatively mature energy storage policies include the US, China, Germany, Australia, and Japan .
Create an Energy Storage Alliance in MENA supported by governments and the private sector to foster the development of ESS in the region, by enhancing public-private partnerships. A key objective of this alliance is to foster the development of ESS in the region through experience sharing and standardization.
These policies are mostly concentrated around battery storage system, which is considered to be the fastest growing energy storage technology due to its efficiency, flexibility and rapidly decreasing cost. ESS policies are primarily found in regions with highly developed economies, that have advanced knowledge and expertise in the sector.
MENA countries currently have nearly 15% of the world’s installed energy storage capacity*. This capacity is significant as it will be essential for integrating variable renewable energy systems into the region’s power grids in a flexible and stable manner. Under the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), grid tariffs and levies are exempted for in front of the metre ESS facilities. This is as long as the stored energy is fed back into the grid.
