The present review has outlined the historical background relating to lithium, the inception of early Li-ion batteries in the early 20th century and the subsequent commercialisation of Li-ion batteries in the 1990s. The operational principle of a typical rechargeable Li-ion battery and its reaction mechanisms with lithium was discussed.
Other developments include the Daniel cell in 1836 and the first rechargeable battery, the lead–acid battery, in 1854. Lithium-based batteries were the last to emerge in the progression of battery technology, only introduced in the 1970s. Figure 2 illustrates the timeline of introduction of the common types of batteries.
In 1938 the Director of the Baghdad Museum found what is now referred to as the "Baghdad Battery " in the basement of the museum. Analysis dated it at around 250BC and of Mesopotamian origin. Controversy surrounds this earliest example of a battery but suggested uses include electroplating, pain relief or a religious tingle.
In 1800, Volta invented the first true battery, storing and releasing a charge through a chemical reaction instead of physically, which came to be known as the voltaic pile. The voltaic pile consisted of pairs of copper and zinc discs piled on top of each other, separated by a layer of cloth or cardboard soaked in brine (i.e., the electrolyte).
Batteries provided the primary source of electricity before the development of electric generators and electrical grids around the end of the 19th century.
He verified this hypothesis through experiments and published the results in 1791. In 1800, Volta invented the first true battery, storing and releasing a charge through a chemical reaction instead of physically, which came to be known as the voltaic pile.

A model material for investigating ion insertion reactions is Li x FePO 4 (0 < x < 1), which separates into two phases at equilibrium ().Recent studies using in situ x-ray diffraction revealed a continuous distribution of lattice constants at high rates of (de)lithiation (6–9).This finding supports the hypothesis that phase separation is suppressed during (de)lithiation and is …
