The emerging digitalised era calls for a paradigm shift in the way batteries are designed and created. The EU-funded BATTERY 2030 project is focussing on a multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral approach, aiming to bring in all the necessary skills to develop a future European battery roadmap while addressing a wide range of strategic applications.
Horizon 2020 added a call to fund battery projects worth EUR 114 million in 2019, under the European Battery Alliance. In 2020, there will be another call to fund projects, this time amounting to EUR 132 million, covering batteries for transport and energy.
The EU’s Horizon 2020 programme has granted €1.34 billion to projects for energy storage on the grid and for low-carbon mobility. In 2019, the EU opened a €114 million call under the H2020 programme to fund battery projects. In 2020, a €132 million call for batteries for transport and energy will follow.
The project aims to reclaim all of the materials and components from end of life lithium-ion batteries and remanufacture them into new batteries with comparable performance to those made with primary raw materials.\n\nLithium-ion batteries, the focus of this project, are currently facing challenges in terms of safety, efficiency to operate over 4V, and weight.
