It is assumed that a conventional supercapacitor tram system (cap-Tram) already has charging infrastructure installed at every stopping station, just like the aforementioned cap-Tram in China. The proposed cap-ACL-Tram system leverages the installed charging infrastructure to minimize the required size of a capacitor bank.
A tram is leaving its current station (accelerating to the next station) drawing power from the accelerating-contact line (ACL). Power from the contact line is used to supply tram auxiliary and traction power demand, the capacitor bank is neither charged nor discharged in PM2, as expressed in Eq. (14).
During acceleration, a tram draws power from accelerating contact line. The proposed system reduces supercapacitor bank size by 44%. Attributed to supercapacitors having high power density but low energy density, a supercapacitor tram system often has charging infrastructure at every stopping station.
Recently, a catenary-free, supercapacitor tram, rolled out in China [25, 26]. The tram has a maximum speed of 70 km/h and a capacity of 380 passengers. Its on-board supercapacitor bank is fully recharged at each stopping station within 30 s, giving the tram autonomy to the next stop .
A supercapacitor and accelerating contact line hybrid tram system is proposed. A tram consumes high energy during acceleration but, low energy thereafter. Supercapacitors can be charged fast but, they have low energy density. During acceleration, a tram draws power from accelerating contact line.
Route and speed profile As previously mentioned, the tram's capacitor bank is fully charged at every stopping station. Thus, as long as the tram can travel from one station to the next, it can complete a route, regardless of the total route distance. For this reason, an imaginary route shown in Fig. 9 is used in this study.
