Establishing a domestic supply chain for lithium-based batteries requires a national commitment to both solving breakthrough scientific challenges for new materials and developing a manufacturing base that meets the demands of the growing electric vehicle (EV) and stationary grid storage markets.
By 2030, the United States and its partners will establish a secure battery materials and technology supply chain that supports long-term U.S. economic competitiveness and equitable job creation, enables decarbonization, advances social justice, and meets national security requirements.
This transition is lowering energy costs to American families and businesses and reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Batteries are also critical to national competitiveness–for grid storage, for the resilience of homes and businesses, and for electrification of the transportation sector.
The percentage of passenger vehicles on the road that are EVs is expected to rise to 28% by 2030 and 58% by 2040, globally. The existing supply chain for EV batteries relies mostly on recycling to close the loop to recover critical minerals such as cobalt, nickel, or copper.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, two years after President Biden signed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced up to $3.5 billion from the Infrastructure Law to boost domestic production of advanced batteries and battery materials nationwide.
The elimination of critical minerals (such as cobalt and nickel) from lithium batteries, and new processes that decrease the cost of battery materials such as cathodes, anodes, and electrolytes, are key enablers of future growth in the materials-processing industry.
