Nuclear micro batteries are micro or even nano scale batteries powered using radioactive isotopes. The electric energy is generated by converting the nuclear energy of emitting radioactive particles. This process is based on the principle of beta voltaic effect or the electron voltaic effect.
It is similar to a miniature solar panel but powered by the green glow from the americium-doped crystal instead of sunlight. The setup is then encased in a small quartz cell. The result is a micro-nuclear battery that, despite its minuscule size, can generate a stable supply of electricity for decades.
The results of the study were published earlier this month in the journal Nature. “Contrary to chemical batteries,” the authors wrote in the study, “the longevity of a micronuclear battery is tied to the half-life of the used radioisotope, enabling operational lifetimes that can span several decades.
Furthermore, the radioactive decay remains unaffected by environmental factors such as temperature, pressure and magnetic fields, making the micronuclear battery an enduring and reliable power source in scenarios in which conventional batteries prove impractical or challenging to replace 4.
The mechanisms and processes within the nuclear battery are analogous to photo-voltaic cells and the development of a nuclear battery can fuel the artificial photosynthesis process. Integrating nuclear batteries with nanomaterials will play an effective role in developing nanodevices or smart miniatured healthcare devices.
